Church Members Participate in Relay for Life
For the American Cancer Society |
 |
Five
people from First Christian Church participated in the Relay for Life
last Friday night, April 27, 2001. Peggy Schneider, Iris Etie, & Ann
Barker were there as cancer survivors while Hermon & Joanne Ussary
participated on the Conroe Regional Hospital Volunteers team of which
Peggy was also a team member. The event started at 7:00 p.m. with music
sung by Melanie Inabinet, testimony by a cancer survivor, and the
Survivors Lap around the track. All survivors were given a lime
green t-shirt with "Caught It, Fought It, Surviving It"
written on the back. After the Survivors Lap, we walked in groups of two
or more until 10 p.m. and the Candlelight ceremony. All the hundreds of
luminaries that lined the track were lit, & all the participants
were given candles. Melanie sang "Light Your Candle" &
then everyone walked the track with their lit candles. It was beautiful,
but more than that, it gave a feeling of hope to all that were there.
Until 7 a.m. Saturday morning, we took turns walking the track while
live bands and recorded music kept up a "walking beat". It got
cold at night (Peggy forgot her blanket), but it was so much fun! Thanks
to all of your contributions, Peggy was able to turn in $1132.50! Next
year, come on out and join us. You won’t regret it. |
