Dr. Wes Morgan Called to Serve

Following an emotional worship service which left congregation members with moist eyes and joyful smiles, on June 24, 2001 Dr. George Wesley Morgan was called to serve as Pastor of First Christian Church, Conroe. Dr. Morgan preached to a full house on Sunday morning, challenging the people to follow God’s lead in leaving the "old" behind to discover the "new" path and purpose that He has designed for His Church. The people responded to the challenge by unanimously voting to call Dr. Morgan to serve as their pastor. Wes, accompanied by his lovely wife Peg, graciously accepted the call and will begin his service to the church on September 1.

Wes and Peg Morgan are originally from Hagerstown, MD. They grew up together, attended the same church and married 38 years ago. Wes calls Peg his best friend and they share a passion for railroading. Peg is a teacher and is delighted with her new job at Reaves Intermediate School in Conroe teaching 5th grade Language Arts and Social Studies. The Morgans have two grown children. Their daughter Lizanne lives in Spring with her husband and three children. Their son David and his wife live in Houston.

Wes attended Bethany College and received his Doctor of Ministry from Lexington Theological Seminary. He was ordained in 1973 and began a career that has included service to churches in West Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina and Texas. Always active in regional, area and ecumenical ministries, Wes has continued his training and has served as a consultant to many congregations in long-range planning, conflict management, program development, and spiritual growth and leader development. For the past 16 years Dr. Morgan has served as Senior Pastor of the First Christian Church in Texas City. During that time his church experienced growth and spiritual renewal.

Wes describes preaching as "the funnest thing I do!" and it shows. Armed with study and prayer and a few scribbled notes, Wes opens himself to the Holy Spirit and delivers unconventional, thought-provoking sermons that speak straight to the heart. A strong administrator with vast experience in program development, Wes is hands-on in all areas of church life. He feels especially led to help each member reach for spiritual growth and learning. He knows that each of us has a purpose in God’s plan and gifts to use to His glory.

In September of last year, the Pastor Search Committee, as representatives of our congregation, began the journey to find the one special person that God had already selected to lead this church into the future. Over 20 candidates were considered. We listened to tapes, watched videos, made phone calls and visits. We prayed for guidance and felt the prayers of our congregation. One name kept circling in our heads and hearts: Wes Morgan, a friend to this congregation. But Wes wasn’t in the market. He had respectfully declined hundreds of job offers during his tenure at Texas City. But just as God was at work on the hearts and minds of the search committee, He was speaking to Wes and Peg as well. THE CALL WAS MADE BY HIM. We were merely instruments. We have been humbled by the experience.
