Remembering the Saints
[Home]
| For centuries the first of November has been celebrated
in the church as a day "to honor all the saints, known and
unknown". In the New Testament, Christians referred to
themselves and to fellow Christians as "saints" (Ephesians
1:1). Here at First Christian we honor our members who have died
in the previous year in this special service.
On the first Sunday in November, we remember each of those saints by saying a few words about them and by lighting a candle. We thank God for each of them and the faith they shared with us. Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by so
great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin
which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that
is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus the pioneer and
perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured
the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the
throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners
such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or
fainthearted. |
